God's punishment to Lot's wife seems harsh. They were saved from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, in Genesis 19, but before we reach the end of the chapter, Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt for "looking back" at the towns.
It only seems natural to look back to watch fire and burning sulfur destroy the towns, why that lead to God killing her in such a wild way?
The confusion comes from an insufficient translation of the Hebrew word nabat. The definition for nabat is to look back longingly, intently, with nostalgia. It is not that she looked back to see what was happening, it is that she looked back and wished for what had been. The very thing God declared as evil. The thing He had saved her entire family from.
What does that mean for us? When God calls us out of something, or saves us from our past or our sin, be glad! Run from it. Don't look back wishing you were still able to do the thing, or think things were better before.
